Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
